NoVaS Transformations: Flexible Inference for Volatility Forecasting∗

چکیده
In this paper we present several new findings on the NoVaS transformation approach for volatility forecasting introduced by Politis (2003a,b, 2007). In particular: (a) we present a new method for accurate volatility forecasting using NoVaS ; (b) we introduce a “timevarying” version of NoVaS and show that the NoVaS methodology is applicable in situations where (global) stationarity for returns fails such as the cases of local stationarity and/or structural breaks and/or model uncertainty; (c) we conduct an extensive simulation study on the forecasting ability of the NoVaS approach under a variety of realistic data generating processes (DGP); and (d) we illustrate the forecasting ability of NoVaS on a number of real datasets and compare it to realized and range-based volatility measures. Our empirical results show that the NoVaS -based forecasts lead to a much ‘tighter’ distribution of the forecasting performance measure. Perhaps our most remarkable finding is the robustness of the NoVaS forecasts in the context of structural breaks and/or other non-stationarities of the underlying data. Also striking is that forecasts based on NoVaS invariably outperform those based on the benchmark GARCH(1, 1) even when the true DGP is GARCH(1, 1) when the sample size is moderately large, e.g. 350 daily observations.

Financial Time Series and Volatility Prediction using NoVaS Transformations
We extend earlier work on the NoVaS transformation approach introduced by Politis (2003a,b). The proposed approach is model-free and especially relevant when making forecasts in the context of model uncertainty and structural breaks. We introduce a new implied distribution in the context of NoVaS , a number of additional methods for implementing NoVaS and we examine the relative forecasting per...
متن کاملForecasting with time-varying vector autoregressive models
The purpose of this paper is to propose a time-varying vector autoregressive model (TV-VAR) for forecasting multivariate time series. The model is casted into a state-space form that allows flexible description and analysis. The volatility covariance matrix of the time series is modelled via inverted Wishart and singular multivariate beta distributions allowing a fully conjugate Bayesian infere...
متن کاملMatrix Box-Cox Models for Multivariate Realized Volatility
We propose flexible models for multivariate realized volatility dynamics which involve generalizations of the Box-Cox transform to the matrix case. The matrix Box-Cox model of realized covariances (MBC-RCov) is based on transformations of the covariance matrix eigenvalues, while for the Box-Cox dynamic correlation (BC-DC) specification the variances are transformed individually and modeled join...
متن کاملComparing the performance of GARCH (p,q) models with different methods of estimation for forecasting crude oil market volatility
The use of GARCH models to characterize crude oil price volatility is widely observed in the empirical literature. In this paper the efficiency of six univariate GARCH models and two methods of estimation the parameters for forecasting oil price volatility are examined and the best method for forecasting crude oil price volatility of Brent market is determined. All the examined models in this p...
متن کامل" Forecasting Stock Market Volatility and the Application of Volatility Trading Models "
This paper examines the ability of GARCH(1,1) and GARCH(1,1) + Implied Volatility models to forecast stock market volatility on the FTSE100 index. Comparing the volatility forecasts with the implied volatility of the corresponding at-the-money index option contract, it is investigated whether successful volatility trading models can be developed. An at-the-money index call was bought/sold if th...
